Notice Board

Welcome

Hello everyone and welcome to another year’s cycling for 2012.  I am sure you have pondered during the New Year period your cycling goals for 2012.  Whether it be the thought of tackling a long-distance cycling event of 200 km-plus and the training regime involved, plotting a series of training techniques that will get you another 2 minutes quicker up Mt. Nebo, or planning the budget for a new bike or new riding kit in helping you look flash outside your favourite cafe.  Whatever your goals for 2012 I challenge you to get out and do the hard yards necessary to enable you to achieve your ambitions throughout the year.

Member Updates

As most of you are aware, Russell Hoelzl had an ‘off’ on a club ride at Strathpine on 2 January and as a result suffered a nasty leg injury.  Now three weeks on I am pleased to report that Russell is convalescing well at home and with the TLC from Angela and the girls is making good progress with recovery.  Some tidy metalwork now resides within Russell’s upper right leg with the Titanium rods graphically illustrated by the radiographs so keenly displayed in the Park Road coffee circle last weekend.  We wish Russell all the very best for a measured and full recovery.

In recent weeks we have seen five new members join our club.  A warm welcome extends to Justin Black, Paul Scott, Tom Prentice, Neil McNamara and Robert Zander.  I trust you will enjoy your membership and that  Gap Cycling Club meets your expectations.  Should you have any questions regarding our club please do not hesitate contacting myself or any member of the committee who will be keen to assist.
Please also visit our club website which is filled with interesting information on all things cycling.

Club Sponsorship

Gap Cycling Club is pleased to announce the continued partnership with our principle sponsor, Harcourt’s Inner West, for the 2012 season.  Harcourt’s Inner West is firmly entrenched in the local community with support provided to many local non-profit making organisations and sporting groups alike.  Financial support is not limited to just sponsorship, with Harcourt’s Inner West pledging to the club a 10% selling fee on the successful saleof any property referred by any Gap Cycling Club member.  Harcourt’s Inner West are also proven leaders in the field of rental property management so if you are considering the purchase of a rental property please contact Stephen Dangerfield at Harcourt’s Inner West to discuss your property management needs.

Additional club sponsorship partners for 2012 are Epic Cycles of Milton, SMK Consultants and iRenovate building and renovation specialists.  Please support our sponsors by making them your first choice when considering an upgrade to a new bike, when renovating an existing property or when developing land for commercial or industrial purposes.

Australia Day Mt. Nebo Ride

The traditional Australia Day Mt. Nebo ride is a favourite with many within the club and further afield, however due to the atrocious weather preceding the National day of celebration the club has elected to postpone the early morning barbecue provisionally scheduled for 9:30 am.  We now intend focusing our catering expertise on the first round of the SMK Jolly’s Lookout Mountain Time Trial Series on 5 February.  Considering the potential for rain it will be of utmost importance for each individual member to access the risk and ride according to the conditions should anyone choose to ride tomorrow.

Safe and happy cycling.

Cycling Australia Affiliation

After many months, possibly years, of negotiation with Cycling Australia (through Cycling Queensland), we finally see light at the end of the tunnel with respect to our affiliation with the national cycling body.

Last week the CA Board approved in principle the notion of a ‘Category 2’ club comprising a majority of non-racing members, with the number of racing members to be less than 10. There would be a requirement that should the number of racing members’ reach 10 or more then the club would be required to transition, within twelve months, to a ‘Category 1’ club which must meet the current requirements in terms of a designated Commissaire and coaching positions.

The Rule in its final form will be formally approved at the next meeting of the Board on 14th December 2011. We have been advised by CQ that should the new Rule not be approved for any technical reason then CQ would be prepared to allow non-racing clubs to be affiliated to CA if they meet the general requirements of the ‘Category 2’ club, specifically having less than 10 racing members with the majority of members being non racing.

This is great news for our club in that we maintain comprehensive insurance for members’ and club officials alike; we have the ability within our club to accept and support a small number of racing licensed members; and that we can maintain our current Championship series under the umbrella of CA without the need for Commissaire and coaching infrastructure.

Club Kit

Our club intends placing another order of riding kit with Champion Systems in late January/early February 2012. This will be a great opportunity for newer members to purchase their new Gap Club cycling apparel, and other members to supplement their existing cycling wardrobe with fresh outfits in order to look their best while parked outside the café with their latté in 2012. A minimum of 10 garments are required per transaction with Champion so please do not hesitate to place your order with Secretary Dee Kabel as soon as possible.

Club End of year Get-together

The Gap Club celebrate the festive season with a family Christmas get-together and barbeque on Saturday 17 December at the Taylor Range Country Club, 28 Greenlanes Rd, Ashgrove, from 2pm. So bring your swimmers, sun block, towels and a hatfor a fun afternoon in the sun. We will also be presenting Club Championship trophies at this event so all members please make an effort to come along with your family.

For catering purposes please RSVP Dee Kabel by 14th December 2011.

I look forward to seeing you at the end of year get-together.

May you and your family enjoy a fabulous Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Happy trails and safe cycling.
