SMK Consultants was formed as a group of registered survey consultants in 1972 and has since expanded their capabilities into the fields of irrigation design and environmental assessment. SMK Consultants provide a combined service for survey, assessment and development of projects mainly in northwest NSW and southwest Queensland. Offices have more recently opened in Gatton and Brisbane in Queensland to extend our registered survey services. Projects have been undertaken in Victoria, southern NSW, north Queensland, northwest Queensland, the Northern Territory and most recently Sudan. The Company provides a multi-disciplinary approach to development proposals with services including ecology, environmental assessment, town planning, surveying and road design, subdivision design and project supervision.

In addition to the four (4) Partners, the Company currently employs 15 staff with a wide range of qualifications and skills including environmental engineering, town planning, rural science, surveying and mapping. The Company provides a range of services to developments in an area ranging from Central Queensland to southern New South Wales.  The group has established a reputation based on professional attitude, skill, ability and a sound knowledge of local issues. Our experience in the region assists in the difficult arena of obtaining development consents.

 

SMK Consultants offers 20-years experience in environmental assessment and environmentally responsible development practices for both rural and urban developments. SMK Consultants provide a scientific approach to the development of a project to establish a sustainable facility, which meets Government and Company environmental goals. We have gained extensive experience in the development of feedlots, extractive industry, industrial developments, assessment of irrigation developments, flora and fauna assessment, planning for farms, development projects and associated rural development. The Company has extensive experience in the identification and mapping of flora and fauna across both NSW and southern Queensland as part of our planning capabilities for rural and urban development. These skills include soil and water investigation and assessment. The Company has undertaken numerous contaminated land assessments and rehabilitation works. An extensive part of the work undertaken involves a clear understanding and working knowledge of current legislation regarding environmental assessment and development issues.

SMK Consultants has established a close working relationship with several specialists in flora and fauna assessment to provide a more intensive service for specific species identification and assessment and to plan the management and conservation of the natural environment around rural areas.

The Company has been preparing Environmental Assessments for a period of 20 years for Local developments including Subdivisions, Road infrastructure, Irrigation developments, Intensive Animal Industries, Rural commodity processing facilities, Gravel pits, Quarries, Abattoirs, Aircraft facilities, Transport facilities, Rural Water Supply projects and other designated Developments. The Company also assists several Councils and other Government bodies with the preparation of Environmental Assessment Reports to meet their responsibilities under various legislative and internal audit requirements.

The experience gained in this work has enabled us to provide an efficient service to meet the needs of developers, regulatory authorities and the public through the preparation of Environmental Statements and Reports to assist with the process of managing and maintaining a viable rural sector.

SMK Consultants has surveyed and designed irrigation projects ranging in size from 5 hectares to 5,000 hectares.  Our services in this field include complete survey analysis, layout design, earthwork design and the preparation of plans and specifications for Tendering purposes.  Through this work, we have established a good reputation for a professional approach to survey, design and construction supervision. To date, SMK has been involved with the survey and design of more than 200,000 hectares of irrigation for irrigation of cereals, orchards, fodder, vegetables and fibre crops. Other projects include gully dam design, stock water storages, stock water reticulation schemes, domestic water advice, flood modelling, hydrological modelling, stormwater modelling and the survey and preparation of survey databases for flood plain management.  The Company's design skills are based on accurate surveying, modern computer assessment, design, and computer drafting. The Company operates Trimble GPS Equipment for use in real time and static situations. Survey equipment includes an EM31SH for soil mapping to depths of up to 6m and Ceeducer depth sounder for bed surveys of rivers lakes and water storages.

This company provides a Survey, Design and Construction Management service to the Irrigation Industry in the Gwydir, Namoi, Macintyre, Barwon, Balonne, Darling, Katherine, Condamine, Lachlan, Murrumbidgee, Macquarie and Central Queensland river valleys.

 

SMK Consultants has been established as Registered Surveyors in Moree for 34 years and were previously known as M.F-G. Shaw and Associates.  The Moree office services the north western region of New South Wales. In 1984, our Company established an office in Goondiwindi to service south western and central Queensland. SMK Consultants provide a complete Planning, Surveying, Design and Project Management Service for Rural and Urban Development for all cadastral and engineering survey requirements.  The Company provides a Professional and Independent Consulting Service based on extensive experience and a broad base of skills and disciplines.  Our staff are qualified in Town and Rural Planning, Road and Urban Design, Floodway design and analysis, Project Design and Surveying.  By combining these disciplines and extensive experience in the one Company, we are able to consult on small and large projects from the feasibility stage through to the construction and commissioning stage.

SMK Consultants has a policy of using state of the art technology where appropriate and have developed in-house software for efficient design and planning of any major projects.  The Company has also developed a capability to provide farm geographic information systems and remote sensing for agriculture.
